Why Using Linktree for Your Social Media URL is Hurting Your Brand

Blog overview - Why using Linktree is a bad idea, and here's what to do instead

In today's digital age, establishing a robust online presence is crucial for businesses to flourish. As an established entrepreneur, you understand the importance of leveraging your online platform to reach a global audience and increase revenue.

This blog post will explore a simple strategy to help you build your brand equity and expand your online visibility through a converting links page hosted on your website.

It's time to say goodbye to outside hosting options, such as Linktree, that are easy to set up but don't help direct traffic to your actual business URL.

A links page hosted on your website is valuable for showcasing your brand, connecting with your target audience, and ultimately driving your business forward. It also allows people to land directly on your website URL to explore your website easily.

Why do you need a links page?

Many social media platforms, such as Instagram, only allow one URL link to be listed in your profile. This limits and reduces what you can promote in your social media feed. It also can challenge effective conversions because it doesn't allow you to correctly direct people to the content they are most interested in.

A great solution to this problem is creating a "links page" that showcases numerous relevant links that can easily direct your audience to the content they want to view.

What is a links page?

A links page is a dedicated page on your website that acts as a directory or hub containing links to various resources, partners, and valuable content for a cold to warm audience. It is a centralized location for sharing essential information with your audience, including recommended tools, publications, freebies, services, and more.

By offering this curated collection of relevant links, you establish yourself as a knowledgeable authority within your industry and provide a streamlined way for your audience to find the right way to connect with you.

For some time now, the solution of a links page has provided many benefits, such as:

  • A clear introduction to you and your services/products
  • A central place to showcase links that you only need to update once
  • A way to funnel your audience to the information they are interested in
  • A singular link that serves as a "business card" to new connections you meet both on and offline

Why Linktree is not benefiting you

There is a large majority of people who use Linktree, but there is a glaring problem with this strategy.

By using Linktree, your audience will be directed to a landing page using a Linktree URL that has nothing to do with your website and appears like a basic and generalized list of links without your business branding. Thus you are missing a significant (and honestly, easy) opportunity for website traffic that builds your SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

For example, my website is www.livelargedesign.com, but if I used Linktree, the URL would be something like https://linktree.ee/adelelivelarge.

This is a technical detail to some of you, but you fail to capture the URL authority from links that are not your business URL.

I'm not going to get super technical here, but to make a long story short, the more people you get to visit your website (www.yourdomain.com), the higher your domain authority will be. This brings numerous advantages to your business, indicating your site's potential to rank effectively within its distinctive competitive landscape.

Understanding domain authority

Having your links page on any URL other than yours will not support your domain authority. So, imagine someone clicks through to your Linktree URL; this tells Google you are using Linktree, nothing else.

When potential visitors are directed elsewhere instead of your website, you miss out on the opportunity to showcase your authority, impacting your site's ranking and the recognition it receives from Google.

By simply placing your links page on your domain (for example, www.yourdomain.com/links), you are supporting your website traffic and domain authority as soon as someone clicks through from social media to the links page. This shows Google that your website, services, and products are relevant and popular, which in the end, supports your Google ranking.

Let's talk about branding

From a brand perspective, Linktree pages are more likely to appear scammy and lack a professional presence than convert your viewers to the action you desire. If you are anything like my clients, you understand the importance of effective branding to build a presence in your market with consistency and ease. Linktree and outside hosting can sabotage your efforts in this area.

It's like a business owner using a Gmail email ([email protected]) instead of an email on their domain ([email protected]). Would you honestly trust them, or are you more apt to think they might be a spammer?

Hosting a links page on your own website allows you to take full control of your brand's online presence and promote brand equity. By establishing trust and credibility, showcasing brand consistency, highlighting strategic partnerships, personalizing the user experience, and driving engagement and conversions, a links page becomes a powerful tool for elevating your brand and making a lasting impact in your industry.

Building your brand equity

Brand equity is the perceived value and reputation associated with your brand. It encompasses trust, credibility, recognition, and your audience's emotional connection with your business.

A links page can play a significant role in enhancing brand equity and cultivating a professional presence that resonates with your target audience.

Here's how:

  • Establishing Trust and Credibility: A links page hosted on your own website reinforces your brand's trustworthiness and professionalism. Unlike external platforms like Linktree, where your brand essentially shares space with other businesses, having a dedicated links page on your website allows you to create a cohesive and focused brand experience. This exclusivity fosters trust and credibility, as visitors perceive your brand as authentic and committed to providing a valuable and consistent experience.
  • Showcasing Brand Consistency: Consistency is vital to building a solid brand. By hosting your links page on your domain, such as "yourdomain.com/links," you maintain brand consistency throughout your website. This reinforces your brand's visual identity, voice, and messaging, creating a seamless user experience. Visitors can navigate your links page effortlessly, finding valuable resources, partner collaborations, and recommended content while immersing themselves in your brand's unique style and ethos.
  • Highlighting Strategic Partnerships: A well-curated links page lets you showcase your strategic partnerships and affiliations, further enhancing your brand's reputation and influence. By featuring trusted and respected brands, influencers, and organizations that align with your values and goals, you demonstrate your ability to form meaningful connections within your industry. These partnerships validate your expertise and foster trust with your audience, positioning you as a reliable authority and increasing your brand's perceived value.
  • Personalizing the User Experience: Unlike generic platforms like Linktree, where branding options are limited, hosting a links page on your website allows personalization. You can tailor the design, layout, and overall aesthetics to align with your brand's visual identity. This customization allows you to create a unique and distinctive user experience that resonates with your target audience. By infusing your links page with your brand's personality and style, you leave a lasting impression, further strengthening brand equity.
  • Driving Engagement and Conversions: A well-designed and strategically organized links page can effectively guide visitors to take desired actions. This direct and intentional navigation helps funnel visitors towards valuable interactions with your brand, increasing their likelihood of becoming loyal customers or clients.

Increasing online visibility:

One of the critical challenges for established business owners is expanding your reach beyond your existing client base. A links page serves as an effective tool for enhancing your online visibility and helping prospects connect with your services and products.

In the current digital landscape, it takes 7-22 touchpoints before a prospect will purchase from you. A links page counts as one of those touchpoints and can begin your process of nurturing your prospects and leads.

Your links page should have an array of ways to connect with you, including both free and paid opportunities, such as:

  • A free assessment or consultation invite
  • An invite to join your newsletter
  • Opportunities to sign up for free lead magnets of value
  • Links to pertinent services/products
  • Relevant blogs or resources
